The Tiger Cowry Shell
Cowry Shells are naturally shiny because, when alive, the shell is covered by a delicate membrane called a mantle.
Should danger approach the mantle is retracted into the shell for protection.
Cowries have been viewed as symbols of womanhood, fertility, birth and wealth.
They have been used like dice. 6 or 7 were thrown and the number that land upwards was the value of the throw.
The Tiger Cowry, because of its size, was in the immediate past used inside a sock to aid darning.
