The Tiger Cowry Shell

Cowry shells are naturally shiny because when alive the shell is covered by a delicate membrane called a mantle.

Should danger approach the mantle is retracted into the shell for protection.

Tiger Cowry ShellCowries have been viewed as symbols of womanhood, fertility, birth and wealth.

They have been used like dice.  6 or 7 were thrown and the number that land upwards was the value of the throw.

The Tiger Cowry, because of its size, was in the immediate past used inside a sock to aid darning.
