Large Barnacles

Barnacles are distantly related to crabs and lobsters. There are around 1,200 different species of barnacles. 

Barnacles have two larval stages. The first is called nauplius and drifts about in the zooplankton. This lasts for about two weeks. 

At the second stage the nauplius metamorphoses into a non-feeding, more strongly swimming cyprid larva.  These larvae cement themselves head down to a firm base in an area that is suitable for their future lives. 

Once fixed the animal secretes around its body a limey wall of six hard armour plates to surround and protect itself.

A two piece lid on top opens for bristle fringed legs to catch plankton for food.
